Legal Aid Society

The legal aid society is an organization created to assist people who have limited or no financial means but require legal help.  Society of such are usually supported by local bar association donations, but at times there maybe some financial support from local government or council.

Today, the fundamental elements of legal aid is providing legal service for the poor by connecting private lawyers interested in providing these free service on a volunteer basis for people who is in need.   To avoid the misuse of the service, legal aid society personnel’s will examine the income and assets of the applicant applying for aid and will then decide if the person has a legitimate need.

Legal aid society will not only provide legal services and/or advice, they will also give counselling, provide mediation, prepare simple legal documents and if necessary given free legal assistance from a panel of volunteer attorneys.  The only thing that they do not provide assistance in is criminal cases.  This is because needy defendants are constitutionally entitled to representation by a public defender or the appointment of private counsel that is funded by the government.  Some societies will provide referral services for suitable attorney to help the needy.

Society providing legal aid services are most common in larger cities in throughout the country and around the world.
